About Pet Planet Ltd.
Pet Planet Ltd, our parent company, is a family business, founded by a mother and daughter team with a passion for animals. After suffering the loss of pets they loved, they embarked on a journey to help pets live longer and healthier lives, through a model based on education and a health-minded approach to pet retail.
Today Pet Planet is comprised of a dedicated group of individuals, corporate employees and franchise operators alike, who are dedicated to your pet’s health and well-being.
Through passion and innovation, we have grown from one Calgary retail location to over 50 stores across North America that offer a variety of services to help support your guardianship journey.
PET PLANET PRINCIPLES
On a daily basis, Pet Planet Ambassadors work towards educating pet Guardians on the value of proper choices for their pet’s diet. As with human nutrition, what our pets eat greatly affects their quality of life. As Guardians, it is our responsibility to fully understand the variety of options available on the market today and the choices we make on behalf of our pets. Pet Planet not only offers superior pet food options to those found on the mass market, our Ambassadors focus on teaching the value of quality pet food choices, and the benefits of a healthier pet.
At Pet Planet, be assured that you are getting the best everyday prices on quality pet food & supplies. We only carry premium products and strive to remain competitive in the market. You can be confident when shopping at our stores that you are providing the best possible care for your pet, without spending more than you should. Plus, our customers enjoy unique user friendly Reward Programs that offer even further savings!
Families and individuals love their pets and at Pet Planet, we take those relationships very seriously. We have products, services and people that you can trust to help you provide the very best care for your pet. In addition, when you entrust Pet Planet with the care of your pet, whether for training, grooming or at the Resort, you can have confidence in the quality of care provided.
Pet Planet has been owned and operated by a Canadian family since its beginning in 1996. When you shop at Pet Planet you become part of our family, not another anonymous customer of a big box store. Families are our focus, because at Pet Planet we understand that families include both the two and four legged individuals!
Not only are we conveniently located where you live and shop, Pet Planet strongly believes that we have a responsibility to the communities in which we operate. We support a variety of pet related organizations and events. Pet Planet stores donate regularly, to carefully chosen pet related clubs and charities within their communities.
Educating the public about domestic animal issues is Pet Planet’s number one priority – we can provide the information you need to make educated decisions for your pet. Whether you are a new Guardian looking for your first pet, or keeping up on the latest in pet welfare, we can help.
Pet Planet advocates responsible pet acquisition and Guardianship–therefore we do not sell animals. 10 million unwanted dogs and cats will be killed in Canadian shelters this year. Pet Planet intends to positively impact these ugly statistics by encouraging pet adoption and actively supporting shelters, legitimate rescue agencies and responsible breeding practices.
WHY WE DON’T SELL PETS
According to No Puppy Mills Canada, 10 million “excess” dogs and cats will be killed in shelters this year. These are not animals that are sick, old, or have temperament problems that would make them unadoptable – these are healthy, happy, and well adjusted animals that, through no fault of their own, nobody wants. Statistically, most of them are between 7 and 14 months old. Every dog or cat purchased from a pet store takes away the chances of a home being found for one of these perfectly healthy animals.
Many customers look for a pet in a pet shop because “I’m looking for a family pet, not a show dog or cat.” They purchase what may be referred to by the store as a “purebred type” or “unregistered purebred”-a federal offense according to the Animal Pedigree Act-and a less than perfect variety of the pet they wanted. Or-they buy a pretty baby, a dog that simply steals their heart.
Either way, when you purchase an animal from a pet store, you stand a good chance of ending up with an animal with poor temperament, erratic behavior patterns or physical abnormalities. The truth is-animals sold in pet stores come from puppy mills and backyard breeders. Animals from these sources are produced for profit, and as such, not tested for genetic diseases common to their breeds. Hip x-rays, blood tests, and eye certifications cost money, and those costs could not be passed through the chain to the pet store without detracting considerably from the profit.
REALIZING THE FULL POWER OF EDUCATION, PET PLANET INTENDS TO POSITIVELY IMPACT FUTURE PET POPULATIONS.
Our goal is to eventually eliminate the tragedy of backyard breeders and pet mills and the impulse buying of puppies, kittens and other animals either directly from these irresponsible breeders or through the pet stores that support them. Over-population of unwanted and genetically unhealthy animals is a direct result of the irresponsible breeding and selling of pets. We also encourage proper research into breeders and their practices for each family considering a new addition. No responsible breeder sells to retail pet stores. They would never allow random strangers to purchase their animals.
Pet Planet advocates responsible pet acquisition and Guardianship–therefore we do not sell animals. It is essential for families to research responsible breeders and their breeding practices, as well as research the adoption option when considering adding a pet to their clan. Acquiring an animal is a long term investment in a member of your family and should never be considered on a whim.
If you are considering a new addition to your family, ensure you visit our Pet Education Centre, where we devote an entire library to Responsible Pet Acquisition. Here you will find important information prospective pet guardians need to know before making the big decision of what pet to get and from where.
